</>What does Stone Skin do?

If full invulnerability feels like too much but dying to one bad pull feels like too little, Stone Skin is the middle ground. You still take damage. You just have a lot more room to make mistakes. Max Health deepens your bar, Armour cuts what gets through, Extra Health Regen trickles it back between fights, and Extra Life Steal pulls health out of the things you hit. Together they turn a squishy dwarf into someone who can genuinely hold a gate. Raise your health ceiling and the bar on screen grows with it straight away, so what you see is what you have rather than the number you started the run with. Nothing happens until you flip the Tougher Dwarf switch on. From there you start on a sensible middle setting and move each dial to taste, or slide one back to neutral to switch just that part off. Flip the master switch off and you hand all four back at once. Good for players who want a fair fight with a wider margin, or for carrying a friend who is still learning the waves.

</>Common questions about Stone Skin

What does Stone Skin do in Stonewards?

Stone Skin makes your Stonewards dwarf much harder to kill without making you invincible. Four dials do the work: Max Health deepens your bar, Armour cuts what gets through, Extra Health Regen trickles health back over time, and Extra Life Steal pulls health out of the things you hit. Together they turn a squishy dwarf into someone who can genuinely hold a gate through a wave. You still take damage, you simply have a lot more room to make mistakes. Nothing happens until you flip the Tougher Dwarf switch on. Free tier on the ProjectMods desktop app.

What do the four dials actually do?

Stone Skin gives you four levers. Max Health raises the ceiling of your health bar, so a bad pull costs a proportion rather than the lot. Armour reduces what each hit takes off, which is the one that makes chip damage from a Stonewards wave feel survivable. Extra Health Regen trickles health back over time, so you recover between fights instead of hunting for a top-up. Extra Life Steal pulls health out of whatever you hit, which rewards staying in the fight rather than backing off. They stack, so a moderate setting on all four is usually steadier than one dial pushed to the roof.

Does my health bar show the new number when I raise Max Health?

Yes. When you raise Max Health in Stonewards, your health bar grows with it, so the number you see on screen is the number you actually have. That matters more than it sounds, because you are constantly judging whether there is room for one more tunnel before the horn, and a bar that quietly showed you the old figure would have you guessing. Change the dial mid-run and the bar resizes to match. Drop it back to 1x and your original health bar comes straight back the same way.

What happens if I leave the dials alone?

Then you get Stone Skin's starting setup, which is deliberately moderate: your health bar at twice its normal depth, Armour at 2x, a light trickle of Extra Health Regen and a little Extra Life Steal. Nothing happens at all until you flip the Tougher Dwarf switch on, so the mod sitting in your list changes nothing on its own. If you only want one piece of it, slide the others back to neutral, 1x for Max Health and Armour, 0 for the two Extra dials, and just that part switches off while the rest keeps working. Flipping Tougher Dwarf off hands all four back at once, without you having to remember where each slider was sitting.

Can I use Stone Skin to carry a friend who keeps dying?

That is one of the best uses for it. Stone Skin only changes your own Stonewards dwarf, so you can become the one who stands in the gate and absorbs the wave while a newer player learns where the monsters come from and how the defences fit together. They still play a real game, which is the point, because nobody learns anything while invincible. If a night goes badly enough that you want the danger off entirely rather than widened, Second Wind is the heavier option, with a host switch that covers the whole crew.

What options does Stone Skin include?

Extra Life Steal

Health pulled back out of the things you hit. 0 is untouched.

Armour

How much incoming damage gets shrugged off. 1x is untouched.

Extra Health Regen

Health trickled back to you over time. 0 is untouched.

Tougher Dwarf

Master switch. Turn it off to go back to your normal body.

Max Health

How deep your health bar goes. 1x is untouched.

Quick Answer

Stone Skin deepens your health bar and adds armour, regeneration and life steal in Stonewards, so you can take hits and keep going without being untouchable. Free tier from ProjectMods.

System Requirements

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5 @ 2.5 GHz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD RX 480

What features does Stone Skin include?

  • Deepen your health bar so one bad pull stops being the end of an otherwise good run.
  • Cut down what gets through with real armour, without ever becoming completely untouchable.
  • Trickle health back between fights, and pull more of it out of the things you hit.
  • Nudge one dial or all four, and slide any of them back to neutral to switch just that part off.
  • See the new ceiling on your health bar right away, so you always know what you are working with.

Best For

  • Players who find full invulnerability boring but keep losing good runs to one unlucky moment.
  • Front-line dwarves who want to hold the gate properly instead of falling back every third wave.
  • Anyone carrying a friend still learning the wave patterns who needs a wider margin to do it.
  • Solo runs where there is nobody around to pick you up and one mistake costs the whole evening.
  • Players stepping up a difficulty who want the fight to stay fair, just less punishing.
