What does Free Build do in Valheim?
Free Build is a ProjectMods mod for Valheim that removes the material cost from every piece your Viking can place with the hammer. Toggle it on and walls, beams, roof tiles, floors, doors, gates, workbench upgrades, furniture, and decorative pieces all place for zero resources. You still need to be near a workbench, stonecutter, or forge for the relevant build category, and structural integrity still applies — Free Build only kills the resource cost. Plan a Yggdrasil-scale longhouse without chopping a tree, raise a stone fortress without a single trip to the quarry, or block out an entire village for a video shoot in an afternoon. Turn the mod off and vanilla costs return immediately for any new placements.
Does Free Build cover stone, metal, and crystal pieces, or only basic wood?
Every piece in the Valheim build catalog goes free with Free Build active. That includes the wood tiers (Core Wood, Fine Wood, dark wood from the Mistlands), all stone pieces from the Stonecutter, the iron, copper, and bronze decorative pieces, crystal walls and shingles, the workbench upgrade station items, signs, banners, hanging braziers, beds, tables, chairs, chests, gates, drawbridges, and even pieces unlocked through the various biome bosses. If the hammer can place it, Free Build makes it free. You still need the underlying recipe unlocked through normal Valheim progression — Free Build doesn't grant blueprints you haven't discovered yet, it only zeroes out the cost of placing what you've already unlocked.
Does structural integrity still apply, or can I float pieces in midair?
Structural integrity still applies fully. Free Build only changes the resource cost; it does not let your Viking ignore Valheim's support system, snapping rules, or terrain collision. A roof beam still needs support from a wall or pillar within range, stone pieces still need to be near a Stonecutter to place, and Core Wood still extends support further than regular wood. This is intentional — Valheim's building is more satisfying when it still demands real architecture, just without the hauling. If you want to bypass support entirely, pair Free Build with Odin's Remote in the ProjectMods launcher so you can fly into hard-to-reach build positions, but the support physics themselves stay vanilla.
Can I use Free Build to repair and refund existing structures too?
Free Build covers placement only — the resource cost on new placements is removed, but the mod doesn't auto-repair existing pieces or refund anything you've already built. To repair your base for free, hit any damaged piece with the hammer's repair action while Free Build is active; the repair cost goes to zero just like a fresh placement. For deconstruction, vanilla Valheim returns most of the original materials to your inventory when you remove a piece with the hammer, and Free Build doesn't change that — you get the same refund as base game. The simplest workflow is build freely while the mod is on, repair freely after raids, and toggle off if you want a vanilla-feeling project.
