Every Valheim trip ends the same way: a full pack, a hard choice between the ore and the wood, and a long sail home to fetch the half you couldn't carry. Packhorse widens the pack instead. Pick anywhere from the vanilla four rows up to nine, press once, and it's done. Nine isn't our limit, it's Valheim's own ceiling, so that's as much room as the game will ever let a Viking carry. The extra rows stick between sessions and sit properly inside your inventory screen rather than floating over the top of it, and one press drops you back to the standard four whenever you want vanilla again. One honest warning: making your pack smaller drops anything that no longer fits onto the ground at your feet. That's Valheim's own behaviour, not ours, so clear the bottom rows before you shrink. Mostly this earns its keep on ore runs, on hauling twenty kinds of building material out to a Deep North outpost, and for whoever in the group always volunteers as the pack mule.

What does Packhorse do in Valheim?
Packhorse widens your Valheim inventory from the vanilla four rows up to nine. Pick the number you want on the Pack Rows slider, press Resize My Pack, and the extra space is simply there, with no Haldor visit and no coin grind first. Nine is the most Valheim itself will allow, so that is genuinely as much as a Viking can carry. How many inventory rows can Packhorse add, and why does it stop at nine?
Anywhere from the vanilla four rows up to nine, and the Pack Rows slider covers that whole span, so you are not locked into the maximum. Six or seven rows is plenty for most players and keeps the inventory screen readable. Nine is where it stops, and that is Valheim's own hard ceiling rather than a number we picked. Push past it and the game will not play along, so Packhorse does not pretend otherwise. Set the slider, press Resize My Pack once, and the new size applies to your character. Change your mind later and you can move it again as often as you like.
What happens to my items if I shrink the pack back down?
Anything that no longer fits drops on the ground at your feet. That is Valheim's own behaviour rather than something Packhorse adds, and it applies whether you drag the Pack Rows slider down or press Back To Vanilla Size. So empty the bottom rows before you shrink, or at least stand somewhere you do not mind a pile appearing, like inside your base next to a chest rather than on a longship deck at sea. Dropped items in Valheim are still collectable, but nobody enjoys chasing bronze bars across a Black Forest clearing. Plan the shrink instead of improvising it and nothing is lost.
Does the extra inventory space survive closing Valheim?
Yes. The bigger pack is saved with your character, so it survives quitting to desktop and comes back with you tomorrow, and it sits properly inside Valheim's inventory screen rather than floating over the top of it. The rows become part of your character rather than an extra panel sitting on top, so they do not vanish when you load back in and they never overlap your hotbar. Your nine rows are simply your pack, in the right position, with the right border, every time you open it. One press of Back To Vanilla Size returns you to four whenever you want vanilla again.
Do I still need Packhorse if I use chests, carts and portals?
You can get a long way on those, and plenty of Vikings do. Chests at every outpost, a cart dragged behind you, and portals for everything that is allowed through will all stretch four rows further than you would think. The catch is ore. Valheim will not let metal travel through a portal, so the copper and the tin still come home the slow way, by boat or on foot, and that is exactly the trip where rows matter more than storage does. Packhorse widens the pack you are actually carrying, from the vanilla four rows up to nine, so one haul brings back more of the vein instead of the first half of it.
